TRAGEDY strikes Vallarta: 2 missing, millions in damages after Nora

This Sunday, after the passage of Hurricane Nora, at least 2 people are MISSING underwater in downtown Puerto Vallarta. The Cuale River overflowed, flooding businesses and first floors of buildings, as well as the parking lot next to the Malecón. Houses in the Romantic Zone, the Buenos Aires neighborhood and El Caloso were also flooded.


Due to excessive rainfall, the Cuale River overflowed from the Buenos Aires neighborhood to the island, even exceeding the level of the concrete vehicular bridge, which collapsed. Right next to the bridge, a part of a hotel and restaurant was swept into the waters; a child is still missing.


Morelos street was completely flooded right before the Cuale river bridge. Several places were flooded, and people could not leave their apartments. Shops and restaurants were seriously damaged after the water entered and filled them with mud.


A restaurant on the Island, collapsed from its outer part towards the river. While the water flooded several streets and also part of the island that splits the river in half, where the new suspension bridge (installed after the passage of Lorena in 2018) also fell, where another flood of the river threw the previous one.


There were two cars swept away, one with a woman on board that is still being searched for. In the Ex Haciendas neighborhood, the river also overflowed its bank. In the San Esteban neighborhood this morning, the river undermined the banks, and a house fell completely into the river.


The high waves continue, and the authorities are already mounting an operation to help people, and assess the damage. The center of Puerto Vallarta is closed in a polygon from Iturbide street to the Romantic Zone, There is no passage to the other side other than by the Libramiento.


The river continues to swell and undermine foundations of other structures. It has left several collapsed buildings in its path, cars washed away and damages that will surely be several million dollars.


It is estimated that this is a 50-yearflood. The authorities have activated the DN / -III Plan, and the Mexican Army is already assisting with the natural disaster cleanup.


The Ameca River overflowed and flooded the Vidanta theme park work in progress on the Banderas Bay side, including the cable car. Several communities in Bahía de Banderas were affected.
