A United States Navy destroyer has arrived in the bay this Friday. It is one of the largest and most powerful warships that has made its way to this destination in recent history.
It is the USS-Bunkerhill, a Ticonderoga-class cruiser destroyer capable of carrying guided cruise missiles. Built in 1985, the enormous ship is a veteran of the Iraq War, and in 1990 it was one of the first ships to bomb targets in that country with Tomahawk type missiles, used to destroy the army of Saddam Hussein.
The Bunkerhill CG-52 is based in San Diego, California. Still, due to its long-range capabilities, up to 11 thousand kilometers, it is constantly deployed in the Middle East and the Sea of Japan. It has participated in many diplomatic and military conflicts.
It has different cruise, anti-ship and anti-submarine missiles, state-of-the-art technology to bombard targets on land hundreds of kilometers away, and CIWS-Phalanx anti-aircraft defense systems, machine guns and a massive 127-millimeter frontal cannon and load for two UH-60 helicopters. The ship is home to 300 soldiers and sailors and 30 bridge officers.
As of now, the mission or reason for being in Puerto Vallarta is unknown.
