Jalisco government orders new mandatory LOCKDOWN for clubs and bars

Last Wednesday, the government of Jalisco issued a new order to close some businesses in Puerto Vallarta and the rest of the state due to the increased number of COVID-19 cases. It’s estimated that in Puerto Vallarta alone,  cases are up 912%.

To avoid this getting worse, all night clubs and bars will have to close for August; restaurants will have to be closed by midnight.

Last Monday, Governor Enrique Alfaro said that “this was not time to stop our economy,” assuring the population there will be no more lockdowns.

And now, Governor Alfaro appears to have changed his mind by ordering this new mandatory lockdown, better known as “The Red Button,” a phrase invented by him last year to name the breaking point of COVID-19 spikes in cases and to take action.

For locals, this is bad news indeed, as so many workers depend on tips earned in clubs, bars and restaurants. Now these businesses will have to close, and many people will be unemployed for a month.

For tourists, one of the biggest draws of Puerto Vallarta is the active and varied nightlife; this won’t be available in the month of August.

It is important to mention that Puerto Vallarta hotels were full of Mexican “summer breakers” and graduation groups during June and July, as many teenagers concluded their studies and increased the revenues in the clubs where they celebrated.

It’s important to mention that beaches, tours and squares won’t be closed, they Wil still open, but there will not be public events.
